Melanosis coli

Melanosis coli
Also called melanosis coli. This condition is characterized by the deposition of melanin-like pigments mainly in the interstitium of the lamina propria mucosa, and sometimes in the muscularis mucosa and submucosa, causing the surface of the colonic mucosa to appear brown or blackish brown, with a leopard-striped or cobblestone-like pattern. The disease affects about 5 out of 100 people in Europe and the United States, but in Japan, it is said to affect 3 to 15 out of 100 people, and is common in people in their 40s to 60s, so it is not a rare condition. However, no special treatment is required. The cause is unknown, but it is often seen in people who tend to be constipated, and it is thought that the onset of this disease is related to the continuous use of anthracene laxatives.
