This stone monument records the origins of the construction of the Uji Bridge over the Uji River. It is currently located at Hojo-in Temple (Hashi-dera Temple and Joko-ji Temple) in Uji City, but was originally located on the north bank of the Uji River, near the bridge. It was lost for a long time, but was discovered in 1791 (Kansei 3). At the time, the lower two-thirds of the monument was already missing, and the current monument has been completed with the full text of the inscription from the Teio-hennenki (Chronicles of Emperors). The inscription is engraved in three lines, with boundaries drawn around it and between the lines. The text is a neat string of 24 four-character phrases, and after describing the fast flow of the Uji River and the inconvenience of crossing it, it records that the monk Doto, who came from the home of Yamashironoemaro, built the bridge in 646 (Taika 2) and saved people and livestock.
