A French architect active in the first half of the 13th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Honnecourt, a small village near Cambrai, he is presumed to have participated in the construction of Cambrai Cathedral, and is said to have been invited to Hungary to build a cathedral there, but there is no definite proof. He traveled widely to study and wrote down in his sketchbook buildings, furniture, sculptures, decorations, and customs that caught his attention. Later, he added simple explanations and diagrams of practical geometric construction methods, construction machinery, weapons, etc., and compiled them into a textbook for future architects.
