He was a minister to King Djoser of the Third Dynasty of Egypt. He was a priest of Heliopolis, but is known for constructing the step pyramid of Djoser and the surrounding tomb complex at Saqqara. He was the first architect to build cut stone buildings, and is the oldest known architect. He is also said to have been a physician. Even after his death, he was known as a wise man, and was later revered as a demigod. During the Ptolemaic dynasty, he was considered the god of medicine, and in Greece he came to be identified with Asclepius, the god of medicine. エジプト第3王朝のジェセル王に仕えた大臣。ヘリオポリスの神官であるが,サッカラにジェセル王の階段状ピラミッドとそれをとりまく陵墓の複合体を建設したことで知られる。切石造の建築を造った最初の建築家で,名前の知られる最古の建築家である。医者であったともいわれる。死後も知者として名高く,後世半神として尊崇され,プトレマイオス王朝時代には医術の神とみなされ,ギリシアでは医神アスクレピオスと同一視されるに至った。
