The number of E. coli colonies that emerge when a certain amount of sample is taken and cultured in a certain way. Generally, the presence of E. coli in water or food indicates contamination by human or livestock waste, or the possibility of such contamination. The level of contamination is estimated by measuring the number of E. coli bacteria through a quantitative test. The discharge standards in the Water Pollution Control Law stipulate the permissible limit for average daily contamination at 3,000 bacteria/ ^cm3 .
