Miyako Bay

Japanese: 宮古湾 - みやこわん
Miyako Bay

The mouth of the bay, which opens to the north, is located almost in the center of the Sanriku Coast in central-eastern Iwate Prefecture. It lies in the sea area south of a line connecting Cape Hei at the northern tip of the Omoe Peninsula with Cape Tategasaki on the opposite shore, and the mouth of the bay is about 4 kilometers wide and 10 kilometers north to south. The Hei River flows into the center of the west coast, and the area around the mouth of the river forms Miyako Port. The Tsugaruishi River also flows into the head of the bay in the south. The water is about 60 meters deep at the mouth of the bay and about 20 meters deep in the center. In addition to fixed net fishing, the bay is used for aquaculture of seaweed, oysters, wakame seaweed, scallops, and other fish. Reclamation work for port construction has progressed on the right bank of the Hei River, and the only swimming beach left is the Fujinokawa River.
