Gokasho Bay

Japanese:
Gokasho Bay

A bay located in the central-southern part of Mie Prefecture, near the base of the Shima Peninsula. It opens out towards the Kumano Nada Sea, is 8.4 km deep and 2.5 km wide at its mouth. Along with the neighboring Ago Bay, it has a typical ria coastline formed by subsidence. The surrounding area of the bay is steeper than Ago Bay, and is bordered by eroded mountain ranges 150-250 meters above sea level. At the back of the indented bay are the villages of Gokashoura, Shukuura, Tasoura, Oukaura, and Sazaura. As the bay opens to the south, the waves are somewhat rough, but the water surface is filled with rafts for cultivating pearls, yellowtail, and other fish, and Shukutaso fishing port has long been known as a base for deep-sea fishing. Mandarin oranges are produced around the bay. It belongs to the Ise-Shima National Park area and has become a tourist destination in recent years, with many villas, yacht harbors, guesthouses, and campsites.
