A city facing the Pacific Ocean in northeastern Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The western part is the southern part of the Abukuma Highlands, and was known as a horse-producing area in the past. The coal seams at the foot of the mountains are at the southern end of the Joban coalfields, and were developed at the end of the Edo period. The city center was a former post station on the Rikuzenhama Kaido road, and grew with the development of the Joban coalfields after the Meiji period, but all of the coal mines were closed by 1973. The city is connected by the Joban Line and the Joban Expressway. As a lumber producer, an industrial park was created to promote the coalfields, and there are factories for lumber, pulp, paper, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and more. 茨城県北東部,太平洋に面する市。1954年市制。西部は阿武隈高地の南部で,古く馬の産地として知られ,山麓の炭層は常磐炭田の南端にあたり,幕末に開発された。中心市街は陸前浜街道の旧宿駅,明治以後常磐炭田の開発に伴って発展したが,1973年までに全炭鉱が閉山。常磐線,常磐自動車道が通じる。木材を多産,産炭地振興のため工業団地が造成され,製材,パルプ,製紙,製薬,化学などの工場がある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。193.58km2。3万1017人(2010)。
