Chorale
Chorales

A hymn from the German Protestant Church, especially the Lutheran Church. Based on the Protestant Reformation, these religious songs had German lyrics and simple melodies, and were written by Luther and his collaborators for the purpose of being sung by the believers themselves when they gathered in churches. They appeared in the 1520s and were initially sung in monophonic form by the congregation, but gradually came to be used as the basis for highly advanced artistic works, giving rise to arrangements such as the chorale cantata, chorale motet, and chorale fantasie, and playing a major role in the development of Protestant church music.
