An 8th century map of the Todaiji manor. The title of the original map reads "Map of newly developed fields" or "Map of cultivated fields." Of the 27 maps currently in existence, 20 are in the possession of the Shosoin Repository, of which 17 are on linen and 3 are on paper. Of the 7 maps outside the temple, one is on linen and is the original, and 6 are on paper and are presumed to be copies. By province, there are 17 maps of Etchu Province, 4 maps of Echizen Province, 2 maps of Omi Province, 2 maps of Settsu Province, and 2 maps of Awa Province. They are classified according to the date of their creation: (1) two maps of Omi Province from the 3rd year of Tenpyo Shoho (751), (2) two maps of Settsu Province from the 8th year of Tenpyo Shoho (756), (3) two maps of Awa Province from the 2nd year of Tenpyo Houji (758), (4) one map of Echizen Province and eight maps of Ecchi Province from the 3rd year of Tenpyo Houji (759), (5) three maps of Echizen Province from the 2nd year of Tenpyo Jingo (766), and (6) nine maps of Ecchi Province from the 1st year of Jingo Keiun (767).
