Japanese: 滞船料 - たいせんりょう（英語表記）demurrage

A charge paid by a charterer or cargo owner to a shipowner for port charges (such as tonnage and port facility charges) and other expenses for the period during which a ship is anchored beyond the contracted period, or for losses related to the next voyage. (1) In the narrow sense, it is a contractual payment to be paid when a ship is anchored beyond the contractually specified number of days (or an appropriate period if there is no contractually specified number of days), and the amount is fixed in advance. (2) In the broad sense, it is a charge to be paid when the amount to be paid for the excess number of days is not fixed in advance, or when a ship is anchored beyond the number of days that can be anchored by paying demurrage. (1) is a demurrage in the original sense, and (2) is equivalent to damages for anchorage. In Japanese Commercial Code, demurrage is considered to be something between damages and freight.

船舶が約定期間を超過して停泊した期間の港費 (とん税や港湾施設使用料など) その他諸経費，あるいは次の航海にかかわる損失などに対して，用船者または荷主から船主に対して支払われる料金。 (1) 狭義には，契約上定められた停泊日数 (定めがないときは相当期間) を超過して滞船させた場合に支払われるべき約定金で，その額があらかじめ定められているもの，(2) 広義には，超過停泊日数に対して支払うべき金額があらかじめ定められていない場合，または，滞船料支払いによって停泊させることのできる日数を超過して停泊させた場合に支払われる料金，の2つがある。 (1) は本来の意味での滞船料で，(2) は停泊損害賠償金に相当する。日本の商法では，滞船料を一種の賠償金と運賃の中間的なものと見なしている。
