Keisuke Okada

A naval officer and politician during the Taisho and Showa periods. Born on January 20, 1868 in Wakasa Province (Fukui Prefecture). Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1889 (Meiji 22). After graduating from the Naval War College, he served in the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and World War I. In 1924 (Taisho 13), he became an admiral, and served as commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet from that year until 1926. He joined the Tanaka Giichi Cabinet in 1927 (Showa 2) and then the Saito Makoto Cabinet as Minister of the Navy in 1932. In 1934, he was appointed Prime Minister. He was attacked during the February 26 Incident in 1936, and narrowly escaped danger thanks to his brother-in-law, Colonel Matsuo Denzo, who was from the same hometown, taking his place, but the cabinet resigned en masse. He was placed under house arrest afterwards, but in April 1937 he was given the honorary rank of former official and joined the ranks of senior vassals. He showed a negative attitude towards the outbreak of war between Japan and the United States, and after the war he became the center of the movement to overthrow the Tojo Hideki cabinet. His son-in-law was Sakomizu Hisatsune, chief secretary of the Suzuki Kantaro cabinet. He died on October 17, 1952.
