A Greek courtesan from Athens who lived in the 4th century BCE. She traveled to Persia with Alexander III (the Great) as the lover of his general Ptolemy (later Ptolemy I Soter), and is said to have urged the king to set fire to Persepolis during a drinking party, but the truth of this is unclear. Thais was also often used as a term for courtesans. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
