...The bubo (also called "yokone") becomes infected, and the pus inside breaks through the skin and escapes. The pus is sterilized, or a vaccine made by growing chancroid bacteria in a culture medium and then sterilizing it is injected intradermally, and the size of the redness is determined 48 hours later. This test is called the Ito reaction, and it is positive in patients with or who have had chancroid. Treatment involves oral administration of sulfa drugs or tetracyclines for 5 to 7 days, but treatment can be continued for a longer period if necessary.
