Thun (English spelling)

Japanese: トゥーン(英語表記)Thun
Thun (English spelling)
A city in the central part of Switzerland, in the central Canton of Bern. It is located at the northwestern end of Lake Thun, where the Aare River flows out. Almost all of the inhabitants are Protestant and speak German. Founded in the 12th century, it was part of the County of Kyburg in the 13th and 14th centuries, but at the end of the 14th century it became part of the Free City of Bern. Even today, it retains the appearance of a medieval city, with many things to see, such as Kyburg Castle (tower 1186-91, residential area 1429), the Protestant cathedral (rebuilt in 1738), and the town hall (1589). In addition to manufacturing machinery, clocks, and electrical appliances, the city produces pottery and cheese. Population 37,950 (1991 estimate).
