A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Asteroidea, family Acanthidae. This beautiful crimson-colored starfish is found on rocks in slightly deep areas of shorelines, with rounded, slender, spineless and smooth arms. The surface of the arms is lined with regular rows of small rectangular ossicles. A small snail called the red starfish Acanthurus yadorininina often forms bumps on the surface of the arms and parasitizes them. Unlike other starfish, it does not have the habit of feeding on useful fish and shellfish. It is commonly found in the rocky reefs of shallow waters south of Honshu and Southeast Asia.
