Lantern procession - Chochingyoretsu
〘 noun 〙 A procession held in a line at night during celebratory events or festivals, with lighted lanterns in each hand. Also, the procession. ※Tokyo Asahi Shimbun - May 10, 1904 (Meiji 37) "The lantern procession for the citizens' grand celebration took place the night before last" [Essay] (1) This is a torchlight procession that was introduced in the American Torchlight Festival at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, but with lanterns instead of torches. It is said that the first torchlight procession was held in 1873 ( Meiji 6 ) by faculty members at the medical school to celebrate the birthday of foreign professor Millerel.
(2) It was held on a large scale to celebrate victories in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95 ) and the Russo-Japanese War ( 1904-05 ). It became more common in the second half of the 1890s and came to be widely held on days that were to be celebrated by the nation.
