(Catalonia)⸨Catalunya⸩ The name of a region in northeastern Spain. It borders France across the Pyrenees Mountains. The southern part is a fruit-growing region facing the Mediterranean Sea. During the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, it became the base of the Popular Front government forces. Its capital is Barcelona.
