A nickname for cryptocurrency. Its official name is XEM. It was originally a project to create a new economic sphere using blockchain technology, and was born as an abbreviation of the English acronym New Economy Movement. The cryptocurrency NEM is characterized by its fast, safe, and stable transactions due to its unique blockchain technology. On January 28, 2018, approximately 58 billion yen worth of NEM was leaked from the major cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck. On December 21, 2019, the Metropolitan Police Department identified several men who had exchanged some of the NEM for other cryptocurrency on a highly anonymous dark site, and searched for related parties on suspicion of violating the Organized Crime Punishment Act. When reporting on the incident, various media companies wrote the cryptocurrency as NEM, and this nickname became popular.

暗号資産(仮想通貨)の通称。正式名称はXEM(ゼム)。本来はブロックチェーン技術を用いて新しい経済圏を創ろうとするプロジェクトであり、英語のNew Economy Movement(新しい経済運動)の頭文字をとった略称として誕生した言葉である。暗号資産NEMの特徴としては、独自のブロックチェーン技術の採用によって取引がスピーディで安全・安定性が高いこととされている。2018年1月28日に発生した暗号資産大手取引所「コインチェック」からおよそ580億円相当のNEMが流出した事件で、2019年12月21日、警視庁はその一部について、別の暗号資産との交換を匿名性の高い闇サイトで応じていた複数の男性を特定し、組織犯罪処罰法違反の疑いで関係先を捜索した。同事件の報道において、メディア各社が同暗号資産をNEMと表記したため、この通称が普及した。
