Ryder (English spelling) Albert Pinkham Ryder

American fantasy painter. Born in New Bedford, a whaling station, he was connected to the sea from an early age. He moved to New York in 1867 to study painting, and in the 1970s he began to paint landscapes that already showed the dreamy twilight quality characteristic of Ryder, which is thought to have been partly due to his severe poor eyesight. After 1977 he visited Europe four times, but was not influenced by it, and from the 1980s he entered an increasingly unique world of strong visions. He painted super-everyday images inspired by the Bible, Shakespeare, and other sources with unrestrained energy, and is highly regarded as an American pioneer of modern expressionism.

アメリカの幻想画家。捕鯨基地だったニュー・ベッドフォードに生まれ、幼い時から海と結び付いていた。1867年ニューヨークに移って絵を学び、70年代に入って描き始めた風景画に早くもライダーらしい薄暮の夢幻のような幻想性が現れたが、極度の弱視もその原因の一端とみられる。77年以後、4回にわたってヨーロッパを訪れたが影響を受けることなく、80年代からはますます幻視性の濃い特異な世界に入った。聖書やシェークスピアなどから構想した超日常的なイメージを奔放な動勢にのせて描き、近代表現主義のアメリカ的先駆として高く評価されている。
