A commercial and industrial city in southern Malawi. It is the oldest and largest city in Malawi. It is located about 60 km southwest of Zomba, at an altitude of about 1,039 m. It was founded by Europeans in 1876 as a Christian missionary base, and prospered as an ivory trading center. It is located on the railway line connecting the port of Beira in Mozambique with Salima, and in addition to distributing and exporting agricultural products, it is also home to light industries such as lumber, brewing, textiles, cement, and tobacco. In 1956, it merged with the Indian trading town of Limbe, and became a commercial center. It is home to the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Malawi, and an international airport is located to the northwest. Population: 331,588 (1987).
