Kingdom of Rwanda

A kingdom in what is now Rwanda, inland East Africa. It was founded by the pastoral Tutsi people who conquered the indigenous agricultural Hutu people and the Twa pygmy people. Compared to the Kingdom of Burundi, the monarchy was stronger and the hierarchical relationship between Tutsi and Hutu was clearer. It was established around the 15th century, and in the late 19th century, under King Rwabugiri, it ruled most of what is now Rwanda. The kingdom continued to exist as part of Ruanda-Urundi during the colonial period, but in 1959, the Peasant Revolution began, which aimed for Hutu majority rule, and the monarchy was abolished in a national referendum in 1961.

東アフリカ内陸部，現在のルワンダにあった王国。牧畜民のツチ族が先住農耕民のフツ族とピグミー系のトワ族を征服して建国した。ブルンジ王国に比べ王権が強大でツチ，フツの階層関係もはっきりしていた。成立は15世紀ごろで，19世紀後半のルワブギリ王の代に現在のルワンダの大部分を支配した。植民地時代に入ってもルアンダ・ウルンジの一部として王国はそのまま存続したが，1959年にフツ族の多数支配を目指す〈農民革命〉が始まり，1961年国民投票で王政は廃止された。
