Japanese: 排水設備 - はいすいせつび（英語表記）drainage equipment

A general term for drainage pipes and wastewater treatment equipment (such as sewage septic tanks) installed to drain sewage from toilets, kitchens, bathrooms, etc., miscellaneous wastewater, and rainwater from a building or site. The basic performance required of a building's drainage equipment is to quietly and quickly discharge unnecessary wastewater into a public sewer system outside the site, and to prevent foul-smelling gases in the sewer pipes from entering the building. Traps are installed in each fixture to prevent this gas from entering. An example is a drain pipe bent in a U-shape under a washbasin, where water (called a seal) is always present in this area to prevent the backflow of foul odors.

便所，台所，風呂場などからの汚水，雑排水や雨水を建物あるいは敷地から排水するために設けられる排水管や排水処理装置(屎尿浄化槽など)などの総称。建物の排水設備に要求される基本的な性能としては，不用な排水を静かにかつすみやかに敷地外の公設の下水道などに排出すること，下水管内の悪臭ガスが建物内に侵入しないようにすることなどがある。このガスの侵入を防止する目的で各器具に設けられるのがトラップである。洗面器の下で排水管がU字形に曲がっているのはその例で，この部分につねに水(封水という)が存在するようにして悪臭の逆流を防止する。
