Kiyama

This is the central area of ​​Mashiki Town, Kamimashiki County, Kumamoto Prefecture. Formerly Kiyama Town. It is said that in 1441 (Kakitsu 1), the Kiyama clan built their castle here and changed the town name to Kiyama. During the Edo period, it belonged to Nuyamazu Tenaga (Tenaga is an administrative district) along with 28 surrounding villages, and the Tenaga Kaisho was established here. Since then, there have been many changes in administrative districts, and each time, the central administrative institution was established here. As an old residential town, some of the rows of earthen storehouse-style merchant houses that recall the collection and distribution of rice, wheat, beans, miscellaneous grains, and even timber remain.

熊本県上益城(かみましき)郡益城町の中心地区。旧木山町。1441年（嘉吉1）木山氏がこの地に居城を築き、町名を木山と改めたといわれている。江戸時代には、付近の28か村とともに沼山津手永(ぬいやまづてなが)（手永は行政区画のこと）に属し、この町に手永会所が設けられた。これ以降、幾多の行政区域の変更があったが、そのたびごとに、この町に行政の中枢機関が設置された。古い在町(ざいまち)であっただけに、米麦、豆類、雑穀、さらに木材の集散をしのばせる土蔵造りの商家の町並みが一部ながら残っている。
