1867‐1948 Yemeni religious and political leader. Born into a distinguished Zaydi family, he became the sect's imam in 1904. He led a rebellion against Ottoman rule, gaining a large degree of autonomy in 1911 and achieving independence in 1918. He often clashed militaryly with British forces in Aden, but also fought a war with Saudi Arabia in 1934 and was defeated, and was assassinated in 1948.
