Savaria in Latin, Steinamanger in German. A city in western Hungary, near the Austrian border. In Roman times, it was the capital of the province of Upper Pannonia. It prospered as the administrative, economic, and transportation center of northern Pannonia until the Huns invaded in the 5th century. It was a key transportation hub connected by rail to Budapest, Vienna, Graz, and Zagreb. Wine, fruit, molasses, spices, and other products from the surrounding areas were distributed there, and agricultural machinery was manufactured. Population: 85,702 (1991 estimate).
