Japanese: 尊属･卑属 - そんぞくひぞく

A classification given to blood relatives within kinship relationships. Spouses do not belong to any category, and there is no such classification for in-laws. Ascendants are direct and collateral blood relatives who belong to a generation earlier than oneself. For example, parents and grandparents are called direct ascendants, and uncles and aunts are called collateral ascendants. Descendants are direct and collateral blood relatives who belong to a generation later than oneself. For example, children and grandchildren are called direct descendants, and nephews and nieces are called collateral descendants. Brothers, sisters, and cousins are of the same generation as oneself, so they are neither ascendants nor descendants.

親族関係のうち血族関係についてつけられている区分。配偶者はいずれにも属さず，姻族についてはこの区分はない。尊属とは自分よりも先の世代に属する直系および傍系の血族である。たとえば父母･祖父母などを直系尊属，おじ･おばなどを傍系尊属という。卑属とは自分より後の世代に属する直系および傍系の血族である。たとえば，子･孫などを直系卑属，おい･めいなどを傍系卑属という。兄弟姉妹や従兄弟姉妹(いとこ)などは自分と同世代であるから尊属でも卑属でもない。
