Alaska [State] - Alaska
The largest and northernmost state in the United States. Abbreviated as Alas. or AK. It is an exclave separated from the 48 states by Canada. The Brooks Range is in the north and the Alaska Range in the south. Glaciers have developed in the southeast, centering on Mount St. Elias on the Canadian border. The Yukon River flows west through the center. The central and southern parts are taiga, and the northern part is tundra. The main industries are fishing and forestry, with agriculture and pulp industry in some areas. Petroleum resources are the second largest in the United States after Texas. There are military bases in various places. It was colonized by Russians in 1784 and became a Russian territory. In 1867, the United States purchased it for $7.2 million through negotiations under then Secretary of State WH Seward. In 1880, gold ores were discovered. It became a territory in 1912 and a state in 1959. During World War II, Attu Island and Kiska Island in the Aleut Archipelago were occupied by Japan. In 1989, a tanker ran aground near Valdez, spilling a huge amount of oil that caused devastating environmental and economic damage. The indigenous people are Eskimos and Southern Woodland American Indians. The state capital is Juneau. The largest city is Anchorage. Area: 1,723,337 km2 . Population: 736,732 (2014).
