Entering the priesthood - Nyūdō
〘Noun〙① (━suru) Buddhist term. (i) To enter a state of enlightenment that is free from the taint of worldly desires. (ii) By extension, to enter the Buddhist priesthood, shave one's head, and become a monk or nun. Also, the person. ※Shobogenzo (1231-53) Four Zen Bhikkhu "Having seen the power of reason, one bows one's head and devotees oneself to the path of enlightenment" (iii) In Japan in particular, members of the imperial family and aristocrats of the third rank or higher enter the Buddhist priesthood.
