A former town in Aira County, central Kagoshima Prefecture. Occupying the upper reaches of the Beppu River that flows into Kagoshima Bay, forestry has been thriving since the feudal era, and Gamo cedar is famous. Washi paper is also a specialty. Hachiman Shrine is home to a large camphor tree (special natural monument) that is 1,000 years old.
