Two wars took place between Finland and the Soviet Union from 1939 to 1944. (1) First Soviet-Finland War (Winter War, 1939-40) When the Nazis came to power in Germany in the 1930s, the Soviet Union began to feel a military threat on its western border. During this period, the League of Nations became ineffective, and the Nordic countries began to pursue armed neutrality, with Finland joining them. When Germany began its invasion of Poland in 1939, the Soviet Union was not satisfied with Finland's neutral policy and demanded a large amount of territory in exchange for the defense of Leningrad.
