Another name for pottery from the early Yayoi period. It was found in an area extending from Kyushu to Nagoya on the Pacific coast and Tango Peninsula in Kyoto Prefecture on the Japan Sea coast, and it has been recently discovered that pottery was transported to areas further east, even reaching Aomori Prefecture. In the early days of Yayoi pottery research, only pottery without patterns was known from Kyushu, but pottery decorated with patterns was found on the riverbed of the Onga River in Tateyashiki, Mizumaki Town, Onga County, Fukuoka Prefecture. Yukio Kobayashi, who learned that the same type of pottery was found not only in northern Kyushu but also in Sanyo and Kinki, began to call it Onga River pottery or Onga River style pottery in 1932 (Showa 7), after the Tateyashiki ruins were also known as the Onga River ruins.
