Vacuum distillation

Japanese: 真空蒸留 - しんくうじょうりゅう

Distillation under reduced pressure. Generally, this refers to distillation performed at a pressure of 200mmHg or less, and is to be distinguished from distillation under reduced pressure of 200mmHg or more. It utilizes the phenomenon that the boiling point of a substance decreases under reduced pressure, and is widely used to separate and refine substances that may decompose due to heating, or substances with high boiling points that are difficult to distill at normal pressure. To generate a vacuum, an ejector is used in large equipment, and a vacuum pump is used in small equipment. Distillation that uses an extremely high vacuum is called molecular distillation.

減圧下で行う蒸留。一般には200mmHg以下の圧力で行う場合をいい，200mmHg以上の減圧蒸留と区別する。減圧下では物質の沸点が低下する現象を利用したもので，加熱による熱分解のおそれのある物質や，沸点が高く常圧蒸留の困難な物質の分離・精製に広く利用される。真空発生には，大型装置ではエゼクター，小型装置では真空ポンプを利用。極度の高真空を用いる蒸留に分子蒸留がある。
