In a broad sense, it is a Persian word referring to someone knowledgeable in Islamic jurisprudence and theology. It has also been borrowed into Turkish dialects. Depending on the region, it can specifically refer to a teacher at a madrasa, a high-ranking ulama, or a leader of religious ceremonies. In East Turkestan, it referred to a religious leader, but later became a general honorific for men. Among Chinese Muslims, Ahong (Aheng, Azhi, Ahong) is a rank of religious worker who is qualified to become the head of a mosque.
