A type of occupation that provides assistance to individuals with physical or mental disabilities that hinder social interaction, helping them to return to and participate in social life. In the United States, it is considered a specialized occupation, but in Japan, social welfare officers, child welfare officers, and welfare officers for the physically disabled who work in welfare offices and child consultation centers are called caseworkers. Caseworkers carry out practical development or rehabilitation in accordance with the provisions of six laws: the Public Assistance Act, Child Welfare Act, Physically Disabled Welfare Act, Intellectually Disabled Welfare Act, Elderly Welfare Act, and Maternal and Child Welfare Act.
