Ishioka [city] - Ishioka
A city located in the Hitachi Plateau, north of Lake Kasumigaura, in central Ibaraki Prefecture. The western part is part of the Tsukuba Mountains. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center was the former castle town of the Matsudaira clan, and since early modern times it has produced sake breweries, known as the Nada of Kanto, as well as soy sauce, furniture, and dairy products. It is connected by the Joban Line and National Route 6, and is close to the Chiyoda-Ishioka Interchange on the Joban Expressway. Since the 1970s, an industrial complex has been under construction. The area is a major chestnut producing region, and carp and eels are caught in Takahama, a settlement at the mouth of the lake. It was the center of ancient Hitachi culture, and the provincial capital was located here, with the remains of Kokubunji Temple and Kokubun Nunnery Temple (both designated special historic sites). In October 2005, Yasato Town, Niiharu County, was incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 215.53 km2 . 79,687 people (2010).
