A village in Aso County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,144 (1995). Located on the western slope of the outer rim of Mount Aso, the Toriko River, part of the Shirakawa River system, and the Nuno River, part of the Midorikawa River system, flow westward. Most of the village area is forest, and the village produces rice, tobacco, and sweet potatoes, but livestock farming is particularly thriving, with a prefectural public breeding farm that takes in and raises calves from farmers across the prefecture, and the Kumamoto Breeding Bull Center.
