Isogani - Isogani

This crab belongs to the order Decapoda, class Crustacea, family Grapsidae. It is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and Australia, and can be found among stones and in rock cavities in clean-water inlet bays. Its coloring is consistent, with blue-green and dark purple spots on the carapace, round dark purple spots on the claws, and horizontal stripes of the same color on the walking legs. Its carapace is about 3 cm wide and rectangular, with a slightly raised surface. There are two deep notches on the front edge of the carapace. The claws are the same size, and males have membranous pouches at the base of both toes that are said to be able to taste, but this has not been confirmed.

The Penicillatus penicillatus lives under small stones on the dirty tidal flats of the inland bay. Males have soft hairs at the base of the toes of their claws, but females and young individuals rarely have any. The carapace is a uniform dark gray-green with no horizontal stripes on the walking legs. It is found from Japan to the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan. Both the penicillatus and the Penicillatus penicillatus are used as fishing bait.

節足動物門甲殻綱十脚(じっきゃく)目イワガニ科に属するカニ。北海道から九州および朝鮮半島、中国、台湾、東南アジア、オーストラリアに広く分布し、水のきれいな内湾の点石の間や岩のくぼみにみられる。色彩は一定しており、甲には青緑色と濃紫色の斑点(はんてん)、はさみ脚(あし)には濃紫色の丸い斑紋、歩脚には同色の横縞(よこじま)がある。甲幅3センチメートルほどの四角形で、甲面がわずかに盛り上がっている。甲の前側縁には二つの深い切れ込みがある。はさみ脚は左右同大で、雄では両方の指の付け根に膜質の袋があり、味を感じるといわれるが、確かめられていない。

　内湾の汚れた干潟の点石の下にはケフサイソガニH. penicillatusがすんでいる。これの雄には、はさみ脚の指の付け根に柔らかい毛があるが、雌や若い個体ではほとんどない。甲は一様に暗灰緑色のじみな色で、歩脚に横縞はない。日本から朝鮮半島、中国、台湾に分布する。イソガニもケフサイソガニも釣りの餌(えさ)として利用される。
