Polish-born mathematician and philosopher. After serving as a soldier in the Polish War of Independence, he studied in Germany and France, and made his mark as a mathematician. He believed that numbers are not merely rational laws, but represent the fundamental movement of all human activity, from the abstract to the concrete (what he called "absolutes"); in this respect his number theories were similar to those of Saint-Martin and Eckartshausen. This led to his numerous works, ranging from mathematics ("First Principles of Arithmetic") to philosophy and religion ("Messianism, or the Absolute Reformation of Human Knowledge"), and even political letters addressed to the Pope and Napoleon III.

ポーランド生れの数学者，哲学者。軍人としてポーランド独立戦争に参加した後，ドイツ，フランスで学問に励み，数学者として世に出た。数は合理的法則にとどまらず，抽象から具体まで人間の全活動の根源的運動を示す(彼の言う〈絶対〉)と考えており，この点サン･マルタンやエッカルツハウゼンの数論に近似している。ここから彼の数学(《算式の第一原理》)から哲学･宗教(《メシアニスムまたは人知の絶対的改革》)，さらには教皇やナポレオン3世にあてた政治書簡に至るおびただしい著作が生まれた。
