Kabuto Shrine

... The name Kabutocho is said to have been derived from the Kabutozuka and Kabutoyama, which were located on the grounds of the Makino family residence here during the Edo period. The following story is passed down about the origin of Kabutozuka (now located within Kabuto Shrine): Around 1050 (Eisho 5), Minamoto no Yoshiie was on his way to Oshu with a large army for the Zenkunen no Eki (The Battle of Zenkunen), when he was hit by a storm in this area. He took a suit of armor, threw it into the sea, and offered it to the dragon god, escaping the disaster (this is why this place came to be called Yoroigafuchi). ...

…　兜町という町名は，江戸時代にこの地の牧野氏邸内にあった兜塚･甲山（かぶとやま）にちなんでつけられたといわれている。兜塚(現在の兜神社内)の由来については次のような話が伝えられている。1050年(永承5)ころ，源義家は前九年の役に大軍をひきいて奥州に向かう途中，このあたりで暴風雨に見舞われ，鎧（よろい）1領をとって海中に投じ，竜神に手向けて難をのがれた(これにちなみ，この所を鎧ヶ淵と呼ぶようになったという)。…
