An insect of the family Formicidae (illustration, illustration). This is an ant of the subfamily Formicidae, which is one of the largest species of ants found in Japan. The worker ants are 7-13 mm long. In normal ants, the size and shape of each ant is clearly different depending on the role they play, but even within a single nest, intermediate types are often found. The body is a dull black color, and the abdomen appears gray-brown due to the bristles. It is distributed from central Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is commonly seen around human dwellings except in urban areas of large cities, and is also found overseas in eastern Siberia, northeastern China, and the Korean Peninsula.

膜翅目アリ科の昆虫（イラスト，イラスト）。日本産のアリの中ではもっとも大型の部類に属するヤマアリ亜科のアリで，働きアリの体長は7～13mm，ふつうのアリではそれぞれの役割により大きさや形態がはっきり違うが，一つの巣の中でもその中間型がしばしば現れる。体は全体が光沢のない黒色で，腹部は剛毛のため灰褐色に見える。北海道の中部から九州にまで分布し，大都市の市街地などを除き人家の周辺にもふつうに見られる種類で，国外ではシベリア東部，中国東北部，朝鮮半島などにも分布する。
