Years of birth: unknown. A poet of the Heian period. His family history and career are unknown, but he is known to have been in his 30s around the 4th or 5th year of Tentoku (960 or 961). He was also known as Sotango or Sotan, as he was a Tango no Jō. He was later invited to a poetry contest held by the Minister of the Left in Sanjō in 977 (977) and submitted a poem to the contest, and he also participated in several other poetry contests. However, he is famous for an incident in 985 (985) when he was not invited to attend a public entertainment event on the day of En'yū-in's son's birth and was chased out. The family anthology "Kochushu" consists of a monthly collection of 360 poems, one for each day of the year, a hundred waka poems (a waka poem composed in units of 100 poems), and 100 replies by Minamoto no Tsuyoshi to the hundred poems. Of these, the monthly collection is a groundbreaking attempt to divide the year into seasons, months, and seasons, with one poem per day as the main theme, and seasonal scenery and annual events also included in designated spaces. The hundred-poem form is also said to have originated with Kochu's composition, and was imitated by many poets, including Keikei and Minamoto no Shigeyuki, becoming the forerunner of a style that would become widely used in later generations. It is noteworthy that neither was ordered by a nobleman, but was an attempt by the poet to compose a world by combining many poems that expressed his own feelings. Many of his ideas and terminology were novel, and the word "Usugasoma" in the poem "Nake ya nake Usugasoma no kirigirisu, passing autumn, so sad" included in "Goshuishū" was criticized by Fujiwara no Nagayoshi as an expression that deviated from the norm, but on the other hand, it also played a major role in ushering in a new style for the next generation. More than 90 of his poems have been collected in imperial anthologies such as "Shuishū".
