Japanese: ささやき竹 - ささやきだけ

A story from the Muromachi period. A monk from Kurama Temple, who was in love with a young girl, used a bamboo tube to whisper to her parents at night, pretending to be telling them in a dream that he should put the girl in a chest and send her off to Kurama. The girl was rescued on the way by the regent, who put a cow in her place, causing a big commotion in the monastery. A similar tale is recorded in Volume 5 of Muju's Zatsudanshu (Collection of Dumplings), as "Ancient Tales, Things Known to Everyone," and can also be found in Volume 8-3 of Jizo Bosatsu Miracle Record, Hokekyo Jikko Chodansho (Direct Talks on the Lotus Sutra), Ichijo Jugyokusho (Courses on the One and Only Venus), and other works. This type of story was further transformed into a story told by young people in the town, and continues in the rakugo story Otamaushi (Otama Cow).

室町時代の物語。娘に恋慕した鞍馬寺の僧が夜，その親に，竹筒を使って，夢告を装ってささやきかけ，娘を長櫃に入れて鞍馬へ送るようにいう。娘は途上で関白によって助け出され，代わりに牛を入れたので，僧坊は大騒動となる。無住の《雑談集》巻５に〈古き物語，人ごとに知れる事〉としてほぼ同様の説話が記され，《地蔵菩薩霊験記》巻８-３や《法華経直談抄》《一乗拾玉抄》などにも見える。さらには町の若者の話に変容して落語《お玉牛》まで続く話型である。
