A strait between the Korean Peninsula and Tsushima. In Korea, it is called the Great Korea Strait. It is about 200 km long and 50 km wide at its narrowest point. It is 210 meters deep at its deepest point, and has been the main sea route between Japan and the Korean Peninsula since ancient times. There is a submarine basin in the sea northwest of Tsushima, which forms the boundary between the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan. The seabed is a stepped continental shelf, with the Korean Peninsula side having a gentler slope. The Tsushima Warm Current flows north, creating good fishing grounds on the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, where seafood such as cod, hairtail, oysters, squid, and seaweed can be caught. Currently, the Kanpu Ferry operates as a regular route connecting Shimonoseki and Busan. [Mori Seiu] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
