A type of farmland in ancient and medieval times. Also written as sono. Under the Ritsuryo Code, enchi was cultivated land that was given in equal shares according to the amount of land, i.e. public land, and cultivation of mulberry and lacquer was encouraged. However, there was no limit to the area owned, and it was freely sold and bought after going through the prescribed procedures, so it was land with strong private ownership. With the decline of the Ritsuryo state, the term orchid disappeared. In the Middle Ages, sono was seen mainly in southern Kyushu as a type of zaike (lay residence). A sono was a unit that included the inhabitants, their residences, and the surrounding farmland, and was understood by the lord, forming a unit of rule. A sono with an actual farmer was called an izono. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
