...A type of wind instrument played with a double reed. Its name means "bundle" and comes from its appearance, which resembles a collection of pieces of wood of different shapes and sizes. Its other name, bassoon, is thought to come from basson (French for "low pitch") or bassone (Italian for "low and large").
