The process that contributes to the formation of sedimentary rocks. The formation of sedimentary rocks involves a complex combination of factors, including the parent material of the sediments, the nature of weathering and erosion, the mode of transportation, and the environment of the depositional area, but more fundamental factors include the atmosphere, the composition of seawater, the state of the biological community, climate, and crustal movement.
