Sleeves - Sleeves

The blank area on the right side of an old document is called the sleeve, and the seal (kao) written there is called the sleeve stamp. An early example is the Dazaifu Mandokoro no Cho from 1045 (Kantoku 2), and many documents issued by various provinces after that, called "chosen," had sleeve stamps added by the provincial feudal lords. Even among samurai, sleeve stamps were widely used after Minamoto no Yoritomo. This type of document was used when there was a large difference in status between the issuer and the recipient, such as when they were in a master-vassal relationship.

古文書の右辺の余白部分を袖といい、そこに書かれた書判(かきはん)（花押(かおう)）を袖判という。1045年（寛徳2）の大宰府政所牒(だざいふまんどころのちょう)の袖判が早期の例で、その後諸国が発給する庁宣(ちょうせん)という文書に、その国の知行国主(ちぎょうこくしゅ)が袖判を加えたものも多くみられる。武家でも源頼朝(よりとも)以後、袖判が多く用いられている。この形式の文書は、発給者と受領者とが主従関係にある場合など、身分の差が大きい場合に使用される。
