1892‐1923 A Finnish female poet. A contemporary of Mayakovsky, Eliot, and Rilke, she presented a defiant view of life that suggested complete liberation from old customs and a bright future. After her death, she gained recognition as a genius modernist poet in Scandinavia, and a little later in the English-speaking world. She contracted tuberculosis at the age of 16, and after a long, impoverished struggle with the disease, she died at the age of 31. Her works include "Poem" (1916), "September Harp" (1918), and "Altar of Roses" (1919), among others. [Takahashi Shizuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
