The chemical formula is PbS. It occurs naturally as galena and with other sulfide minerals. Only divalent lead compounds are known. It can be obtained as a black precipitate by passing hydrogen sulfide through an aqueous solution of lead(II) compounds or by adding thiourea to an aqueous solution of lead(II) acetate while heating it. It has a cubic crystal system with a sodium chloride structure and a melting point of 1114°C. Its density is 7.59 g/cm3. It is practically insoluble in water, with a solubility of about 8.6× 10-5 g per 100 g of water at 18°C. It is practically insoluble in dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid, but is soluble in nitric acid. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
